The Château of la Lorie

The castle of La Lorie presents a remarkable aesthetic unity which reflects the inspiration of his successive owners and their concern of preserving his coherence through evolutions that they inspired as well on the level architecture as external fitting out.
The chateau built by the Great Provost of Anjou in the 1650’s was enlarged with successive buildings around five large courtyards all through the 18 th century. In 1780, the marquis of la Lorie added a chapel and the marble lounge, magnificently furnished under its graceful cupola.

The marquises of Saint Genys following the Dukes of Marmier and Fitz-James became the owner of this huge chateau and introduced elegant and refined additional elements by fitting out the great wood panelled dining room. As great art lovers, they completed the decoration of the chateau with a very sound taste.
The terraces and gardens dotted with ponds as well as the flowerbeds and lime-tree quincunxes overlook the racecourse, still considered as one of the most pleasant in Western France . |
The architectural exception
In terms of west of France Architecture, le château de la Lorie is most incomparable. Its exceptional nature is due to successive improvements made by enlightened owners who endeavoured years after years to give an unique architectural plan to the castle : le château de la Lorie has been built around 5 courtyards in a permanent regard of symmetry. Horses in la Lorie
Since the Constantin’s, the history of la Lorie is closely connected to France horse-breeding. Gabriel-Felix Constantin, the Maine , Anjou and Touraine royal stud-farms’ superintendent, became a remarkable horse breeder.

The Marble Lounge
The large marble room, built in 1780, is exceptional in a private castle since the techniques used were usually dedicated to royal palaces. Drawn by the architect Jean-Sébastien Leysner, this masterpiece is close to the great ‘salon de la Guerre et de la Paix ’ executed the century before in the castle of Versailles .
